National Police Commemoration Day is marked every year on October 21 to commemorate the police officers who have sacrificed their lives in the course of service. It was in 1960 that an Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories was organised to observe October 21 as the National Police Commemoration Day. The day is set to honour the Bravehearts who protect the citizens of the country and are responsible for the enforcement of law and order. Police Commemoration Day is also observed as Martyr's Day in all police forces across India.

Both police officers and the citizens mark the Police Commemoration Day with a strong sense of patriotism. A national-level Police Commemoration Day parade has been organised since 2012 at the Police War Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.

History

The Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21 to pay tribute to police martyrs for the past 62 years. The trend started to mark the supreme sacrifice of 10 personnel of Central Reserve Police Force, who laid down their lives while fighting the Chinese army at India-China border in Laddakh on October 21, 1959.

China eventually returned the bodies of the 10 Indian martyrs on November 13, 1959. They were cremated with full police honours at Hot Springs. Later in 1960, October 21 was officially recognised and ever since, the day is commemorated as the Police Commemoration Day across the country.

Police Commemoration Day is observed with the objective of encouraging and honouring the police officers who carry out their jobs with utmost diligence and dedication. The day serves as a reminder for all to honour and praise the nation’s police force and their contributions.
